COMPARISON BETWEEN DIFFERENT ATOMIZATION MODELS AND EXPERIMENTAL DATA

Abstract

In diesel engines the ignition delay time consists of two parts, the physical and the chemical delay. In cases where the chemical ignition delay is short, i.e. high temperature cases, the predominant part of the total delay time is the physical delay, composed of liquid core disintegration and droplet evaporation. This is often the case in diesel engines and it is therefore essential to understand the spray atomization, but the processes involved are very complex and little known about due to experimental difficulties. Numerical studies based on theoretical models can be an alternative. In this paper five atomization models are studied and compared with experimental data using the 2-D SPICE code for spray simulations.
