THE APPLICATION OF QFD TO THE MANUFACTURE OF ENGINE BEARINGS

Abstract

A Quality Function Deployment project was conducted at the Federal Mogul bearing plant, in Blacksburg Virginia, during the first half of 1996. The project examined the application of Mr. Bob King's matrix of matrices QFD approach, to the design and production of engine main bearings. In particular, a proposed bearing design change and a production process change were evaluated, using this methodology. The multiple matrix approach produced remarkably consistent results and proved to be a very thorough, yet relatively simple and easy to use, QFD technique.
