EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF PARTICLE DEPOSITION ONTO A CYLINDER IN CROSS-FLOW

Abstract

Experiments on particle deposition onto a cylinder in cross-flow were performed. Air was the carrier fluid for the multi-component, ferro-silica dust from a smelting furnace. The dust had particle size ranging from 0.05 to 160 µm. Temperature and airflow were varied while monitoring the accumulated deposit mass, the wall temperatures and the heat flux.

About 80 percent of the deposition occurred on the front part. Most of the large particles are deposited on the front side of the cylinder while most of the small particles are deposited on the rear side of the cylinder. Because of wide range of particle size distribution and dependence of heat transfer on particle size, very little thermophoretic effect was observed. Discrepancy between experimental and theoretical results, is attributed to rebound, resuspension and gravitational effects as well as experimental errors. The theoretical results are discussed further in a companion paper.
