Abstract

The ionic liquid system [bmim]Cl-AlCl3 ([bmim]+ = l-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation) is used as a combination of solvent and Lewis acid catalyst in a number of carbon-carbon and metal-carbon bond-forming reactions. Friedel-Crafts reactions of ferrocene and ruthenocene, as a function of acidity of the ionic liquid are reported. The formation of cationic metal-arene complexes under similar conditions is also reported.
