A well-known scientist in the field of theory and applications of control systems — Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich —
Professor, Academician of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine,
Director of the Space Research Institute of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and National Space Agency of Ukraine

After graduating from the Kiev Polytechnical Institute Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich worked at the research institutions of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, completed thesis for the Candidate of Science (Ph.D) degree. During these years Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich realized research in the theory and application of extremal control systems.

After joining the Institute of Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR he completed thesis for the Doctor of Science degree in engineering and became Head of department of Discrete Control Systems. A major part of research of this period was concerned with development of fundamentals of the theory of the special class nonlinear control systems with pulse-frequency modulation. The obtained results were included into the monograph which was the first work in this field in the world literature.

Scientific works of Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich in 1973–1978 dealt with the synthesis problem of control systems by means of Lyapunov functions.

Since 1979 Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich and his followers have developed a new approach to synthesis of adaptive control systems based on methods of solving problems of parametrical identification giving guaranteed estimates and also on new algorithms of solving optimal control problems under uncertainty conditions. Robustness was also studied in the the monograph published by Springer-Verlag in 1992.

In 1988 Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich was elected Corresponding Member of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The same year he became Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Avtomatika” (since 1994 “Problemy upravleniya i informatiki”).

In 1992 Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich was elected Academician of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In 1995 Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich became Deputy Director of V.M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and in May 1996 he headed the Space Research Institute of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and National Space Agency of Ukraine. As a director Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich directed his activity on making the Institute a leading institution of space science in the Ukraine, development of basic and applied research and its coordination in accordance with main directions of research in the National Space Program of the Ukraine.

For a long time Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich has been a member of a National Committee of the Ukrainian Automatic Control Association, the national division of International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich is the author of more than 250 scientific papers, including 7 monographs, initiator and chairman of Ukraininan conferences on automatic control. Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich founded a scientific school in the field of discrete systems in the Ukraine: more than 30 Candidates of Science, 9 Doctors of Science completed their theses under his supervision. For more than 25 years he delivered lectures in control theory in Kiev Polytechnical Institute. Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich is a permanent participant and lecturer of the World Congresses of IFAC.

As a member of collective of authors of the first in the world “Encyclopedia of cybernetics” Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich was awarded the State Prize of Soviet Union in the field of science and technology. In 1991 for his works on the control theory he has been honored with the title Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine.

“ Problemy upravleniya i informatiki” (former title ‘Avtomatika’)

The Journal is the only periodical in Ukraine publishing papers of fundamental and applied direction within a wide scope of problems of automatic control and informatics for more than 40 years (was founded in 1956)

Subjects covered in: Problems of controlled systems dynamics, methods of identification and adaptive control, optimal control and optimization methods, mathematical simulation and study of complex controlled systems, general problems of space exploration, control of physical objects and technical systems, control and optimization of systems with distributed parameters, methods of control and estimation under uncertainty conditions, qualitative methods in controlled systems theory, information processing methods, space information technologies and systems, technical tools for measurements and control, space monitoring, economic and management systems, problems of information protection. The papers of scientific conferences and workshops on automatic control are published on a regular basis.

The Journal is published under creative support of Ukrainian Association on Automatic Control; National Space Agency of Ukraine; Academic and branch scientific institutions; Leading higher educational institutions of Ukraine and of former Union republics; Scientists and specialists abroad.

Editor-in-chief — Professor Director of the Space Research Institute of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and National Space Agency of Ukraine, President of the Ukrainian Association on Automatic Control, Academician of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Vsevolod M. Kuntsevich.

Journal ‘Problemy upravleniya i informatiki’ is completely republished in the English by publishing house BEGELL HOUSE, INC. (USA) under the title “Journal of Automation and Information Sciences”.
