OBJECTIVES
The objective of Multiphase Science and Technology is to provide a route for publication of authoritative overviews of important subiects in the area of multiphase systems. It is intended that the articles will be systematic presentations of the state of knowledge in various areas: it is not intended they give detailed historical reviews of the development of the subjects. Rather, they should present the latest state of the art in a tutorial and systematic manner so that the intelligent non-specialist can read them and gain an up-to-date idea of the present stage of development in a given area. It is not a primary purpose to publish papers of normal length on original research work, though longer treatises on research may find a place in the Journal.
PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSION
Initial submission: It is expected that most of the articles in the Series will arise from contacts made with potential authors by the Editors or by members of the Editorial Board. Nevertheless, the Editors would welcome independent approaches made to them by authors who have articles which they think may be suitable for the series. Following the initial contact, one of the Editors will invite the potential author to submit a detailed (4-5 page) outline of the article for assessment. The Editor inviting this detailed outline will consult with members of the Editorial Board etc. in assessing the suitability of the proposed material and will communicate with the author accordingly. Sometimes, an iterative process may have to be gone through at this stage to bring the outline more closely in line with the requirements of the Journal. It is very important that the author indicates the prospective date of completion of the first draft of the article at this stage to help the Editors in planning and scheduling the Journal to ensure rapid publication of the material.
Submission of first draft: Three copies of the first draft should be sent by the author to the Editor with whom he had had the earlier correspondence on the outline. The manuscript should be prepared according to the format given below.
Reviewing: The Editor to whom the article is sent will seek reviews of the article from appropriate experts. In the light of these reviews, the Editor will correspond with the author with the objective of producing a final draft.
Submission of final manuscript: On completion of the reviewing and modification stage, the author should submit two copies of the final manuscript to the corresponding Editor. It is important that this final manuscript, also, conforms to the format rules given below. The material for illustrations (originals or drawings, photographs etc) should be included at this stage.
Transfer of copyright: Contributions to Multiphase Science and Technology are accepted only on the understanding that the copyright is vested in Begell House Inc. All papers accepted for publication must be accompanied by a copyright release form signed by the author(s). This form is available from the Editorial Coordinator. Where text, figures, photographs etc are reproduced from copyrighted material, the author(s) will be required to produce written evidence mat appropriate permission has been granted by the copyright holder(s). Copies of a Permissions Request Form aimed at helping authors in seeking permissions can be obtained from the Editorial Coordinator.
FORMAT
The Editors wish to place as few restrictions as possible on authors in the preparation of their manuscripts. However, it is considered essential to have a minimum number of rules regarding preparation and these are as follows:
Length of article: The articles should be of the order of fifty pages long corresponding to the order of one hundred pages of double-spaced typescript.
Nomenclature: A fill! nomenclature list should be given at the end of the article, but before the references. Symbols should also be defined in the text on their first use. Nomenclature should follow the standards now adopted internationally (see Mayhew, Exp. Heat Trans. 2, 149-172 (1989) using capital subscripts (L,G,S) to indicate liquid, gas and solid and using eG eL and eS for phase fractions, a for heat transfer coefficient, h for enthalpy, l for thermal conductivity and h for viscosity. Subscripted variables should normally be included in the nomenclature list; however, if a subscript is used very frequently, then subscripts may be defined following the main nomenclature list. A list of Roman symbols should be given first in alphabetical order, followed by a list of Greek symbols, followed by the list of subscripts (if appropriate). The number of the equations in which specific variables are defined should be included in the nomenclature list. All quantities should be in SI units.
References: The reference should be given in the name-date system. For example. Smith (1969), Jones (1971a). In the reference list the fall titles of the articles should be given. For example: Smith, J. V. (1961) Gamma spectroscopy of air bubbles in sodium, J. Multiphase Flow 22, 691. Thus, italic type should be used for the titles of journals and for the titles of contributed volumes in which articles appear (in this latter case, the Editors and publishers of these volumes should be indicated). Where italic type is not available for the author, he should underline those parts of the reference which are to be set in italic type. If there are more than two authors, then, in the text, the reference should be made in the form Smith et al (1971) but in the list of references, the full list of authors should be given.
Headings: The main headings in the article should be in capital letters and should be numbered sequentially (1,2,3...). The next level of headings should be in lower case but be on a separate line with appropriate numbering (eg. 1.1, 1.2, 2.5...). The third level of headings should be in lower case but with the text continuing on the same line. This third level of headings should be numbered 4.1.1, 2.9.2 etc.) Only three digit headings should be used (ie. Avoid numbers like 1.1.1.2, 6.9.2.1.7).
Equations: Equations should be numbered sequentially through the text.
Figures: Figures should be drawn so that they can be reduced successfully to Journal size without loss of definition in the legends and symbols. Figures should be listed sequentially through the text.
