AIMS AND SCOPE
The aim of the journal is to advance the research and practice in diverse areas of multiscale computational engineering. The journal will publish original articles and educational articles of general value to the field that will help bridge the gap between modeling, simulation, and design of products, based on multiscale principles aimed at reducing prototyping costs and time to market. The scope of the journal includes articles concerned with bridging of physical scales, ranging from the atomic level to full-scale products, and problems involving multiple physical processes interacting at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The emerging areas of computational nanotechnology and computational biotechnology are of particular interest to the journal. The journal is intended to be of interest and use to researchers and practitioners in academic, governmental, and industrial communities.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
General. Manuscripts submitted for publication must represent original contributions and must not have been published before (except in the form of an abstract, or as part of a lecture, review, or thesis). The author(s) must secure the permission from the copyright holder (usually the publisher) to reproduce any materials that have been previously published elsewhere. Manuscripts must be submitted in English. The authors are responsible for proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar; authors are also responsible for correctly formatting reference lists and reference citations, which are clearly outlined below. The manuscript should be prepared according to the format given below.
Format. Print manuscripts double-spaced on one side of the page only, with at least 1-inch margins. Number all pages, including those containing tables and figures. Because of the international character of the Journal, no rigid rules concerning notation or abbreviation need be observed by the authors, but all definitions in the paper should be properly defined. Spelling and punctuation will be US English in the final printed journal, so it is helpful if manuscripts are prepared with this in mind.
Page 1:
Title of article; full names and affiliations of all authors; full name, mailing address, telephone/fax numbers, and email address of corresponding author; brief (4–5 words) running head; amd an abstract of up to 250 words clearly stating the main results.
Page 2 on:
Text of article. Group all tables, figures, and figure captions at the end of the article, following the references.
Use no more than three levels of headings. Number headings sequentially using numerals, as follows: level 1 headings 1, 2, 3, etc.; level 2 headings 1.1, 2.1, etc.; level 3 headings 1.1.1, 1.1.2, etc..
Number equations as appropriate sequentially through the text.
ELECTRONIC IMAGE PREPARATION
Prepare figures so that they can be reduced to a maximum of 6.5 inches wide without loss of definition in the legends and symbols. Use only Arial and Symbol for text within figures. All other fonts must be PC-compatible and accompany the figure files on disk.
Acceptable formats for figures are PDF files saved at 300-600 dpi with all fonts embedded; JPEG, TIFF, or EPS files saved from the original application, also saved at 300-600 dpi. Original application files may be submitted after conferring with the Editor to ensure compatibility. Embedding figure files in MS Word is not acceptable for final output, because of the loss of resolution.
SUBMISSION FOR PEER REVIEW
The Editor-in-Chief will seek reviews of submitted articles from appropriate experts and will assure rapid turnaround within six months of submission. Each manuscript will receive at least two reviews. Submission implies that the author will be willing to make any necessary revisions. Retain all original figures until conclusion of the review process.
Electronic submission
Electronic submissions are encouraged. Email a PDF of the manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief at fishj@rpi.edu. Mail one copy of the printed manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief at the address below.
Hard copy submission
Send three copies of the printed manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief:
Professor Jacob Fish
Editor-in-Chief
Department of Civil Engineering
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Troy NY 12180-3590, USA
For all submissions, electronic or hard copy, include the following information:
- Corresponding author’s name, complete mailing address, and email address.
- Statement attesting that the manuscript has not been submitted elsewhere for review for publication.
- If applicable, written permissions from all copyright holders (usually the publishers) of any material reproduced from previously published works. These may be letters, faxes, or printed emails.
SUBMISSION OF ACCEPTED ARTICLE
After a manuscript has been accepted and all required revisions have been incorporated, mail 2 copies of the final manuscript, typed double-spaced on US Letter or A4 paper, and a CD or diskette containing the complete manuscript, to the Editor-in-Chief at the address above. Figures should be saved in separate files from text and tables. Label the disk with the author’s last name(s), title of the article, abbreviated journal name, and date. Include high-quality printouts of original figures, even if art is submitted electronically. Please provide a list of the software programs used for the art and text and the file names on the disk.
Original images should be scanned at a minimum of 300 dpi and saved as JPEG or TIFF. High-resolution prints of all figures must be submitted in case they need to be rescanned by the publisher. Do not use gray rules, only black. If text is printed over gray backgrounds for any reason, the gray must be at least 50% lighter than the text. If possible, avoid grayscales entirely.
AUTHOR PROOFS AND OFFPRINT ORDER INFORMATION
A proof of the typeset article will be sent to the corresponding author for review and correction of technical information approximately one month before publication. Proofs are sent by email in PDF format; if a fax is needed, please so indicate in a cover letter with the final submitted materials. The usual turnaround time for corrections is 48 hours (not counting weekends). The corresponding author will receive a copy of the issue. An order form for additional of prints, copies, and subscriptions will be included with the author proofs and may be returned with author corrections.
