ELF Tomography of the World Thunderstorm Activity

ABSTRACT
A tomographic technique is suggested for reconstructing the spatial distribution of the world thunderstorm activity. The technique is based on measuring average Schumann resonance spectra at several spaced sites over the globe. The reconstruction procedure makes use of the thunderstorm intensity range dependences recovered at each measurement site. An efficient algorithm has been developed allowing an essential reduction in the computational resources required. As has been shown, the characteristic structures of the world thunderstorms concentrated near certain continental centers can be restored from the Schumann resonance spectra measured at several observation sites disposed optimally on the globe. The feasibility of recovering the global thunderstorm activity distribution is analyzed numerically, based on the data from existing observation sites of the Schumann resonances.
