ABSTRACT
The periodic structure of a free-electron laser is considered as being made up of groove waveguides coupled parallel to one another with a period L < λ, and a common gap thus developed between the parallel waveguide plates serves as a transit channel of an electron beam. In this electrodynamical system, the waves traveling in the groove waveguides are orthogonal beam; the latter therewith interacts with space harmonics of the fast waves. A measuring methodology for analyzing critical modes of the fast waves in a structure of coupled groove waveguides is suggested and implemented, and any arbitrary cross-sectional shape of the grooves is allowed. Reported here is the critical wavelength of coupled groove waveguides with rectangular and H-shaped grooves and different widths of the transit channel. Results obtained for one- and two-groove rectangular waveguides are compared with theoretical predictions, with lends support to the method.
