    ABSTRACT

    The properties of eigen-oscillation spectrum of a quasi-optical MW sphere resonator filled with randomly located sapphire particles have been experimentally studied at frequencies of 26 to 38 GHz. The particles may be of regular (as a cube) or irregular shape with characteristic sized comparable to the wavelength in the material. It has been found that such a resonator has a stochastic spectrum in which the properties characteristic of the quantum chaos are exhibited, namely, the "repulsion-of-levels" effect, the distribution of inter-frequency (IF) intervals close to Wigner distribution, closeness of spectral rigidity curve to the corresponding curve for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) of chaotic matrices. An effect on a resonator of a short EM field pulse with MW filling has been investigated. It has been found the resonator offers the capability of retaining the MW pulse energy in a relatively wide frequency range (over 10%) for quite long span of time. The explanation of this effect has been suggested.
