Cherpak ABSTRACT The feasibility of whispering gallery modes has been shown experimentally for dielectric resonators in the form of a truncated cone, either with or without a conducting end-face wall. The effect persists for slope angles of the cone generatrix up to 35°. The dependences of the eigenfrequency, Q-factor and electric field distribution on the slope angle of the cone generatrix have been obtained for the 8-mm wavelength range. A comparative analysis of the eigenfrequencies and Q-factors has been performed for various kinds of cone-shaped cavities, as well as for a hemispherical resonator. It has been shown that the Q-factor and the conductor coupling factors of the cone-shaped and the hemispherical resonator become commensurable for the generatrix slope angle of 6 to 8°.
