Rogers, R.N., Ph.D. ABSTRACT Since the discovery of epidermal growth factor (EGF) in 1972, a major emphasis in the study of wound healing has been the role of growth factors and cytokines, and identification and characterization of growth factors and cytokines and their use as therapeutic agents has been a major area of clinical and basic research. This article presents an overview of the process of wound healing of the skin and perspectives on how gene therapy and DNA technology may be used to improve treatment of wounds.
