Metabolic Mechanisms of Relationship between Higher Aquatic Plants and Water Bloom Forming Blue-Green Algae

ABSTRACT

Intensive development of higher aquatic plants in continental water bodies is responsible for the increase in the content of polyphenols dissolved in water, which results in the decrease in the numbers of blue-green algae in plankton communities. Under aerobic conditions oxidation of polyphenols to appropriate quinones results in the increase in their biological activity. Changes in the structure of phytoplankton are conditioned by the difference in the response of various groups of algae to the influence of metabolites of higher aquatic plants.
