    ABSTRACT

It has been found that hydrological peculiarities of some mountain tributaries of the Danube River, including the Prut, Siret, and Cheremosh rivers, are responsible for a rather low primary production. In all seasons decomposition predominated over production. Only in some cases, the index of the intensity of self-purification (A/R) was higher than 1 (1.05−1.10). For the most part phytoplankton net production was characterized by negative values, which testifies that allochthonous organic matter was of considerable importance in the energetic supply of the ecosystem.
