On the Mechanism of Action of Easily Oxidizable Phenols on Photosynthetic Activity of Algae

ABSTRACT

Absorption of exogenous oxidized polyphenols by algal cells is responsible for changes in their photosynthetic activity. Under conditions of subacidic reaction of cytoplasm, quinones are reduced at the expense of hydrogen ions formed as a result of water photolysis in the photosystem II. Cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylation is inhibited under such conditions. The algal cell becomes energetically exhausted. The photosynthetic activity of blue-green and green algae is inhibited at different concentrations of quinones dissolved in water.
