Under conditions of subacidic reaction of cytoplasm, quinones are reduced at the expense of hydrogen ions formed as a result of water photolysis in the photosystem II. Cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylation is inhibited under such conditions. The algal cell becomes energetically exhausted. The photosynthetic activity of blue-green and green algae is inhibited at different concentrations of quinones dissolved in water.
