Structure and Distribution of Meiobenthos in the Region of Methane Gas Seeps from the Black Sea Bottom

ABSTRACT

The taxonomic composition and numerical distribution of meiobenthos in the Black Sea gas seeps region to the southwest from the Crimean Peninsula were studied. The pattern of vertical distribution of meiobenthos along the O₂/H₂S gradient and its stratifications within the bottom ground testify to a wide diversity (representatives of 13 high-rank taxa) and intense quantitative development of meiobenthos at depths of 77−232 m. It is concluded that the environmental conditions, in particular, gas conditions formed around methane seeps, enable the adaptation of meiobenthos and promote its development.
