Symbiotic Microflora Associated to the Surface of the Plerocercoid Ligula intestinalis (L.) (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidea)

ABSTRACT

It was shown that the bacteria secreting proteolytic enzymes into the environment are associated with the digestive-transport surface of L. intestinalis to a various degree. The total number and biomass of these bacteria decrease with an increase of the strength of association of bacteria with the parasite's surface. Some portion of the washed-off bacteria release their proteolytic enzymes into the medium; these enzymes are active within a wide pH range.
