Sensitivity of Marine Heterotrophic Bacteria to the Influence of Ultraviolet Radiation

ABSTRACT

It has been found that the sensitivity of heterotrophic bacteria of the Black Sea to the influence of ultraviolet (UV) radiation varies from season to season. It has been shown that its dynamics are conditioned by changes in the intensity of UV radiation, which depends on seasonal dynamics of the total solar isolation which increases in summertime. The highest tolerance of heterotrophic bacterioplankton for UV radiation was registered in summer and autumn. The author hypothesized that the tolerance of marine bacteria for UV radiation is conditioned by their seasonal adaptation to the increase in the intensity of the background UV radiation, and also by seasonal substitution of UV tolerant species for UV sensitive ones.
