    ABSTRACT

Based on the analysis of the data on dynamics of saprobiological parameters, species composition, numbers and biomass of hydrobionts of macrozoobenthos, zooplankton, periphyton and zoophytos, it is shown that the aquatic ecosystem of the Danube water bodies lost its ecotone function. At present the borders of the "river - sea" aquatic ecotone have been shifted towards the Kiliya delta extension, and are located on the seashore. These borders mostly coincide with those of the strictly protected zone of Danube Biosphere Reserve. The idea to organize the large-capacity shipping across the aquatic and terrestrial complex of the biosphere reserve should be considered unpromising and ungrounded from the viewpoints of fundamental science, international law, and shipping practice.
