Sakevich ABSTRACT In natural water bodies, polyphenols dissolved in the water are represented mainly by their oxidized and reduced forms. The highest intensity of oxidation of polyphenols to quinones is observed in alkaline environment. Reduction of the oxidized polyphenols is registered in acidic environment. Mainly quinones rather than polyphenols are capable of inhibiting the functional activity of algae. The degree of biological activity of these compounds in relation to algae is determined by their oxidation-reduction properties.
