    ABSTRACT

Accumulation of the ions of heavy metals (on the example of Cu2+ and Mn2+) by higher aquatic plants, including Najas guadelupensis L. and Ceratophyllum demersum L., as well as by green filamentous algae, including Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kutz. and Oedogonium cardiacum (Hass.) Wittr, was studied with the purpose of determining the most promising monitor species. It has been found that hydrophytes are capable of accumulating large amounts of copper and manganese. In terms of their capability for accumulating metals, the studied plants may be arranged in the following order: Cladophora glomerata > Oedogonium cardiacum > Najas guadelupensis > Ceratophyllum demersum. The obtained data suggest that higher aquatic plants are characterized by more advanced mechanisms of metabolic control of the content of heavy metals as compared to filamentous algae. It is advantageous to use filamentous algae for monitoring the degree of contamination of the aquatic environment by the ions of heavy metals, in particular by Cu2+ and Mn2+.
