Separation Region Downstream of an Orifice in a Pulsating Flow

ABSTRACT

Results of experimental investigations of the structure of flow in a separation region under the conditions of external flow pulsations are presented. As the object of investigations we have selected a configuration that includes a bluff barrier attached to the wall. To ensure a nonresonant flow of the investigated range of frequencies, the experiment was carried out with a short channel in which an orifice was installed directly at the inlet. In the flow above the separation region velocity pulsations with a high and virtually constant, over the range of frequencies, relative amplitude of about 0.3 were created at a low level of pressure fluctuations. Experimental data on the structure of a turbulent separation flow under the conditions of superposed external flow velocity pulsations in a wide range of frequencies f = 0−380 Hz were obtained and generalized in the work. The effect of a double decrease in the dimensions of the separation region in a pulsating flow in comparison with a stationary one has been revealed.
