ABSTRACT
The aim of this paper is to present a pioneering study of thermo-bio-convection in a dilute suspension of gyrotactic microorganisms, in a horizontal fluid-saturated porous layer of finite depth, heated from below. Thermo-bio-convection combines the effects of natural convection and bioconvection. A shallow fluid saturated porous layer heated from below is considered; the analysis of the interaction of the unstable density stratification induced by upswimming of gyrotactic microorganisms and that induced by the temperature variation in the porous layer, heated from below, poses an interesting stability problem. This study may be relevant to a number of geophysical and engineering problems, including microbial-enhanced oil recovery.
