ABSTRACT
This review is dedicated to its primary author, Werner Goldsmith. As the "Father of Impact," he will be remembered for signal contributions to head injury biomechanics as well as to the broader fields of impact and penetration. I will also remember him for his tenacity in the face of opposition, his fierce loyalty to anyone or anything he believed in, and his devoted friendship. It was my great privilege to associate with him first as a student and later as a colleague and to join him in undertaking this review. The hours we spent together in this work are of far greater value to me than the content of the manuscript, but it is my hope that it will serve as a suitable tribute to his character and accomplishments.
