ABSTRACT
Solidification phase-change problems occur in a variety of industrial applications, such as the system of thermal energy storage. In this article, an enthalpy formulation based fixed-grid approach was employed to study the solidification around a number of staggered cylinders. Pure water was adopted as the working fluid, and the non-Boussinesq model was used to calculate the variation in water density to account for the natural convection during solidification. This study focused on the effects of cylinder arrangement and number of cylinders on the growth of ice layer and on the heat transfer characteristics during the solidification process. Two layouts of cylinder arrangement frequently used in practical design were employed in the numerical simulation. The comparison of hydraulic and thermal behavior of both layouts during solidification was addressed in this study. In conclusion, critical points to design the system of thermal energy storage with better heat transfer performance were summarized.
