A general expression about effective mean temperature difference (MTD) is derived for a heat transfer process between two working fluids and is taken as a criterion to analyze the deviation of log mean temperature difference (LMTD) and log mean enthalpy difference (LMED) used for the calculation of heat and mass transfer processes of moist air in cooling coils and cooling towers. It is shown that LMTD and LMED are always less than the effective MTD and mean enthalpy difference (MED) for cooling coils, and LMED is always greater than the effective mean enthalpy difference (MED) for cooling towers at the HVAC design condition. For accurate performance prediction, the derived general expression is recommended in this article. In addition, for cooling and dehumidifying coils, the equivalent heat transfer temperature difference is suggested instead of LMED to calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient.
