ABSTRACT
The paper reports the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of an air-cooled tube-in-fin heat exchanger equipped with novel fins that prove effective in low Reynolds number flows. The fins have many perforations and are configured into trapezoidal corrugations. The air-side heat transfer coefficient is about 1.4 ∼ 2.2 times that of a plain-fin heat exchanger at equal Reynolds numbers.
An analytical model to predict the air-side performance of the heat exchanger is developed, dividing the flow field into potential flow cores on the upstream sides of the tubes and the wake zones behind the tubes. Experimental data of heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are compared with the predicted values. The both are found in reasonable agreement.
