    ABSTRACT

    This paper theoretically and experimentally investigates single cylindrical pin fins subject to a pool of saturated isopropyl alcohol. Initially, a two-dimensional steady-state conduction equation is solved numerically to obtain the temperature distribution and base heat flux of a fin. Copper fins with a diameter of 25 mm and lengths of 40, 55, 70, and 85 mm in boiling liquid are studied. In addition, both heating and cooling processes and fins with or without insulated tips are taken into considerations. The result show that hysteresis effects are more pronounced for longer fins at a fixed diameter. Also, both burnout and film-collapse superheats are higher for a longer fin. The critical temperatures for fins with heat transfer at a tip are higher than those with adiabatic fin tips. The same phenomena are observed in a subsequent boiling experiment. Finally, the predicted temperatures and heat fluxes of fins compare with experimental data.
