    ABSTRACT

    The oscillatory asymptotic model was developed to analyze a well-known fouling phenomenon, the fluctuation of fouling data. This was recognized in some applications three decades ago, but the well-known phenomenon had not yet been analyzed from fundamental and theoretical points of view. The concept is to separate the fouling rate into two parts: a mean component that exhibits an asymptotic behavior and a fluctuating component that exhibits an oscillatory behavior. The fouling data were measured in helically ribbed tubes. It is applicable to both enhanced and smooth surfaces. The model is supported by experimental data and is confirmed by the continuity relation. Kern and Seaton's asymptotic model is a special case of the oscillatory asymptotic model when the amplitude of fluctuation is negligible.
