ABSTRACT
The purpose of this work is to investigate the laminar zone of an axisymmetric jet at low Reynolds numbers with long laminar regions. Flow visualization associated with image processing is used to study the instabilities in the transition zone. The first instabilities which appear are the sinuous mode or (and) the varicose mode followed by symmetric or anti-symmetric Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. In this work, we study particularly the sinuous mode. Quantitative results are given on the frequencies and the velocity phase of the instabilities.
