Everest ABSTRACT A laser-based particle track imagining technique has been developed and applied to flow visualizations in sooty and nonsooty methane counterflow diffusion flames (CFDF). To the best of our knowledge, these flow visualizations have revealed the first visual proof of the existence of sooty methane flames on the fuel side of the stagnation plane. A comparison of the experimentally determined particle velocity with the computed gas-phase velocity along the stagnation streamline showed that the thermophoretic forces on the seeding particles should not be neglected while interpreting the results from flow visualizations in flames with low strain rate.
