Kohayashi ABSTRACT In this study heat transfer and flow visualization experiments were performed on five different tube and fin heat exchangers (four of them with slits) for Re = 100 to 1500. The objective was to investigate the effects of various arrangements of slits and slit enclosure walls on the flow behavior and subsequently the heat transfer. The flow behavior was investigated by means of a dye injection and hydrogen bubble visualization technique. The heat transfer performance evaluation, performed by a single blow technique, revealed that the heat transfer is significantly lower for a certain slit and slit enclosure arrangement. It was shown by flow visualization techniques that the slit and slit wall enclosure arrangement has a significant influence on the flow behavior and consequently the heat transfer. Based on the obtained results, recommendations for the slit enclosure wall design are made.
