Nardini ABSTRACT This article reports on experimental visualizations of the natural convective flow between heated horizontal plates. Visualization is obtained by means of a laser light sheet and injection of incense smoke inside an open-ended cavity. The study is carried out for two different plate spacings (b = 20.0 mm and 40.0 mm) and several wall heat flux values. The corresponding Grashof number ranges between 9.80 × 103 and 1.20 × 106. Three heating modes are tested (1) both plates equally heated, (2) top plate heated and bottom one unheated, and (3) top plate unheated and bottom one heated. The symmetric heating mode shows various flow patterns as compared to the asymmetric heating modes (i.e., bottom or top heating plate heated) depending on the distance between the plates. Several secondary motions are detected inside the open-ended cavity at different positions from the inlet edge.
