ABSTRACT
The steady-state characteristics of flow in horizontal noncircular ducts with triangular and square cross sections has been investigated experimentally. The study is concerned with the effect of corner ribs fitted to the ducts on the nature of the flow. The experiments are performed with the hydraulic-diameter-based Reynolds numbers ranging from 185 to 15,000 and involve dye injection for flow visualization and pressure drop measurements in the ducts. Ducts with and without corner ribs were studied for comparison.
The introduction of the corner ribs into the cross section of the ducts has increased the axial pressure drop as evident by the increment in friction factor values and significantly improved mixing downstream of the ribbed section by creating a turbulent-like flow at much lower Reynolds numbers compared to an unobstructed duct. This is anticipated to improve the forced convection heat transfer.
