The purpose of this study is to clarify the cooling and freezing process of water around three cooling tubes placed in staggered arrangement, as the basic research into an ice-on-coil type of ice thermal storage system. This process was visualized using the laser holographic and the laser light sheet techniques. Optical measurements were performed by changing the cooling rate and the distance between the tubes. We were able to obtain some significant results about the effects of these factors on the temperature and the flow fields. These effects are reported in detail in this article.
