Merzkirch ABSTRACT Planar particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were performed in fully developed turbulent pipe flow at Reynolds numbers of the order of 105. Coherent structures were identified in the fluctuation field by using the swirling strength as the identification criterion. A number of properties of these structures were determined for later use in a model describing the principle of the cross-correlation ultrasound flowmeter by means of an approach based on systems theory.
