VELOCITY MEASUREMENTS IN BUBBLY FLOWS WITH PARTICLE TRACKING VELOCIMETRY

ABSTRACT

Turbulence measurement has great importance in two-phase flows because of its close relationship to phase distribution. Since vortex stretching is associated with turbulence generation and dissipation, it is necessary to utilize a whole-field measurement method rather than point measurement techniques to obtain full-field characteristics. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is a measurement technique that provides instantaneous velocity fields in a two-dimensional plane. Three-dimensional (3-D) measurements in a thin light slab are possible with a camera-pair, stereo system. In this article, a methodology that allows for velocity field measurements of both components of a two-phase bubbly flow is presented. Results from two-dimensional (2-D) measurements are presented.
