ABSTRACT
Numerical simulations of the exact (DNS) or filtered (LES) Navier-Stokes equations are of great importance for analysis of physical phenomena and development of models for any turbulent flow. However, these tools need accurate initial fields and adapted treatments for the boundary conditions. This paper suggests some numerical procedures to generate any turbulent field with prescribed parameters. These fields may be used as initial or boundary conditions for any DNS or LES computation but also as a way to visualize a synthetic turbulent field reconstructed from experimental statistics. First of all, the Rogallo method for the generation of a turbulent velocity-vector field is given in detail. Then, a new procedure to generate any scalar field with prescribed statistics and characteristic length scales is proposed. Eventually, a procedure to initialize the initial dispersion of a Lagrangian spray field is presented. Again, the characteristic sizes of the clusters of droplets and their local density are entirely controlled.
