VARIATION OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN OXIDE REMOVAL USING CATHODE SPOTS WITH ELECTRODE-GAP WIDTH

ABSTRACT

Our recent work has revealed that two different mode discharges exist in a vacuum arc in the case of oxide removal from a metal surface. They are caused mainly by differences of electrode-gap width. Short electrode-gap widths of less than 25 mm decrease the discharge voltage and thereby lower electric energy consumption. New investigation with an electrostatic probe indicates that the reason for which such different discharge modes appear is the variation of potential drop near the anode. Experimental results are discussed in comparison with theoretical analyses.
