    ABSTRACT

A one-dimensional non-stationary model of the plasma discharge in a Hall thruster was developed, based on a fluid description of ions and electrons. The main purpose of this model was to demonstrate the ability of fluid models to describe properly the main phenomena taking place in Hall thrusters. For this purpose, this model was compared with the hybrid kinetic/fluid model [1] which was already successfully compared with experiments. The oscillatory behavior of the discharge was recovered, as well as the critical voltage of the transition between stationary and oscillatory discharge. The profiles of density, electric field, electronic temperature and the fundamental frequency of the discharge was found to be in very good agreement with the hybrid model. The good behavior of the model studied suggests that fluid models can offer a very interesting alternative to kinetic models.
