    ABSTRACT

Diagnostic analyses were performed on a d.c. carbon arc discharge, using two different experimental systems, under conditions in which the fullerenes and carbon nanostructures are formed. The self-absorption effect in the d 3Pg, v' = 0 ® a 3Pu, v" = 0 band was used for column density determination of C2 radicals and temperatures. The fullerene C60 content in the collected soot was determined by spectrophotometric absorption of the toluene soot extracts, and using HPLC technique. Temperatures within 3500 - 6500 К, column densities within (0.5 - 10)xl016 cm-2 and C60 content within 4 and 15 wt% were found depending upon the arc current, pressure of the buffer gas (He) and plasma coordinates.
