Jones ABSTRACT Plasma jets generated by a d.c. torch in water vapour/argon mixture were monitored by three chromatic photo detectors in wavelength regions 400-800, 550-1200, 750-1800 nm. Deviations from the operating regime were enforced by changing arc current, argon flow rate and position within the jet. It is shown that such deviations are distinguishable as different locations in a HLS chromatic space. Calibration with a standard ribbon lamp shows the feasibility of simultaneous tracking the temperature of plasma heated powder particles. Due to better responsiveness to variations of argon flow, the chromatic parameters may be used for monitoring purposes instead of the arc voltage.
