    ABSTRACT

    To obtain reproducible and reliable plasma sprayed coatings, it is mandatory to achieve an on-line control of a few well chosen parameters. Among them the substrate and coating surface temperature time evolution, is a key parameter. To measure it, IR pyrometers are used. The aim of this paper is to determine in which wavelength range the pyrometric measurement will not be disturbed by the direct or reflected radiation of the plasma jet, the radiation of hot particles in flight and at last the absorption by the CO2 or H2O contained in the surrounding atmosphere. Measurements and calculations performed in the 2 to 14 mm wavelength range, have shown that in the 8 - 14 mm range, the thermal radiation emitted by the in-flight particles and the plasma jet and its plume are negligible as well as the absorption by the surrounding atmosphere. Measurements close to the sprayed spot, have been performed continuously during spraying and have demonstrated the feasibility and the interest of such a pyrometer.
