    ABSTRACT

One of the most effective ways to increase the resource of metal products working under abrasive friction and contact weariness is the hardening plasma treatment of the surface and its coating. The application of these processes allows controlling the structure and the properties of the near surface layers of metal keeping the chemical structure and properties of the bulk of metal intact. Especially favorable is the use of plasma technologies for the local hardening treatment and coating, for the recovering of worn items. This paper deals with the peculiarities of the new design of plasma generator used for the technologies mentioned above, with examples of their use for the enhancement of functionalities of metal products, with the hardening of the flanges of railway wheels, of rollgang rollers for rolling mills. The subject of plasma coating is considered also with regard to the wear resistant refractory layer over copper molds of machines for continuous casting and the repair of railway frogs made of manganese steel.
