Yan ABSTRACT Sliding bubbles play an important part in flow boiling inside and outside tubes but there have been few detailed studies of the mechanisms by which they grow and enhance heat transfer. In this paper the flows of heat into one particular steam bubble sliding underneath a sloping plate in saturated water are studied experimentally and analytically. It is shown that, for this bubble, the local variations in wall temperature are consistent with evaporation from a microlayer 50 - 70 μm thick, but this accounts for only 25 to 35% of the total heat flow into the bubble deduced from its rate of growth.
