FORMATION OF MONOSIZED DROPLETS BY A VIBRATING LIQUID-LIQUID JET

ABSTRACT
An experimental rig has been designed and constructed to produce monosized droplets by vibrating a laminar water jet issuing into another immiscible liquid. The formation of monosized droplets was studied in five different liquid-liquid systems using a mechanical vibrator. The frequency of maximum instability was predicted using Rayleigh's analysis, and then applied to the predicted frequency to achieve monodispersity. Uniform-sized droplets ranging from 500 to 1500 μm were produced using a spinnerette (200-μm-diameter nozzle). The viscosity of the continuous phase was varied between 1.5 and 32.5 mPa. The effect of viscosity of the continuous phase on drop sizes is reported.
