Sermon ABSTRACT The surface chemistry, morphology, and size of particles emitted to the atmosphere from diesel engines are described using microFTIR, XPS, SEM, and TEM. Morphologies and chemistries may together define their toxicity. The reaction of the surface of these particles with N2O (or O2) in the absence of catalysts without total DEP oxidation is discussed. This could define the N-states seen on the DEP surfaces. The importance of these findings to the potential for better abatement of such particles from diesel emissions, with an improvement in urban air quality, is discussed.
