    ABSTRACT

The main methods of identification and quantification of metallic species in diesel soot require dissolution and destruction of solid samples; however, there are difficulties associated with these analyses, such as rate of solubility, destruction of sample, and risk of sample pollution during the preparation stage. Furthermore, the entire sample is consumed, ruling out another analysis.
In this article, we present a new technique of metal analysis: the TRELIBS (Time Resolved Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) by a direct analysis of exhaust particulate collected on filter, avoiding the destruction of sample. After a presentation of this new technique and the results obtained on diesel particulate analysis, these results are compared to SEM/EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersing Spectrometry) and ESR (Electron Spin Resonance) results. Also, an organic analysis method on PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon) was developed by GC/MS (Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry). Furthermore, the chemical characterization of diesel particulates will be linked to engine parameters (fuel type and air/fuel ratio).
