    ABSTRACT

The objective of the investigations is the optimization of furnace processes for melting of secondary aluminum. The main emphases are the reduction of product losses, product quality, and the minimization of emissions. A combination of experimental basic research and computer simulations was used. The results showed that the emissions of adherent organic substances can be influenced by a controlled process operation. In particular, the continuous provision of oxygen at furnace temperatures above 900 K avoids emissions. The formation of oxide at the aluminum bath surface rises logarithmically with increasing residence time. However, the main influence on oxide formation is the temperature of the bath surface. For the process of melting scrap aluminum, a high convective heat transfer is advantageous. Radiative heat transfer also has a positive effect on an even temperature distribution across the complete bath surface.
