ABSTRACT
This paper gives an overview about low-NOx combustion technologies and summarizes the activities of GWI in that area during the last 20 years. The focus will be drawn to actual low-NOx technologies like flameless oxidation and staged combustion, and their application in process technology. Substantial advances in recent years have been made in combustion engineering and the recovery of heat from flue gas for preheating of the combustion air. Flameless oxidation, direct fuel-gas injection (Japan), and the development of ceramic self-recuperative and regenerative burners are examples of innovative developments. These systems allow combustion efficiencies of up to 85%.
